What to Expect from a Good Plumber It is natural for a homeowner to feel panic when a faucet in the house becomes leaky or when a pipe bursts all of a sudden. After all, the house could get flooded and there could be damage to the property. However, in their panic, these homeowners may forget to be scrupulous in their choice of plumbers in order to get what needs to be fixed done. Unfortunately, there are many unscrupulous plumbers out there who take advantage of hapless homeowners who just want their faucets and their pipes back in working order as soon as possible. They often charge more than they should, dilly-dally with the work that needs to be done, and even fail to fix the problem properly. Such plumbers can get away with it by dassling and confusing the homeowner with plumbers’ jargon that just fly through the homeowner’s head. But you can save yourself from being taken advantage of by a plumber with less than honest intentions. Here is how. Find the Right Plumber If you happen to have problems with your plumbing at home, try not to panic and try to resist the urge to engage the first plumber that you see on the phonebook. Call up around three or four people and get quotes for their service. When you ask for a quote, make sure that you know not just the fees you will be charged with for the actual work but also whatever additional fees the plumber may ask you to pay. These additional fees may include the cost of driving to your home to get the job done. Another thing you should inquire of the plumber when you get quotes is whether or not they would require you to pay a deposit or if they charge a specific amount up front. It may take you some time to get the answers to your queries, but at least in this way you would be able to get an idea of how much your job order will cost you and you will be able to prepare yourself. Also, getting price quotes will give you an opportunity to choose the cheapest plumber available. Do not forget to get references when you get quotes, though. A plumber may be cheap but that is not a guarantee that his services are good. Keep Everything Documented Once you have found a plumber to your liking and have engaged his services, you should keep an eye out on what he does with your plumbing. Before the plumber starts the actual work, he should make an assessment of the actual problem. After all, what you may have described to the plumber whilst you were getting your quotes may be different from what is really going on with your plumbing. Once that assessment is done, the plumber should provide you with a written statement of what needs to be done with your plumbing and how much it should cost you before he starts his work. Of course you cannot expect this statement to be exact. Again, it may turn out that the actual problem with your plumbing is different from what you thought it was and from the initial evaluation of the plumber. Nonetheless, a good and honest plumber will keep you informed of the progress of his work and provide you with a modified statement with each unexpected development. Know What You Are Paying For Given that it is expected that the work statement will change in the entire duration that your plumber will work with you, you should know exactly what you are paying for. Ask for a detailed invoice from your plumber after the job is done and check if it is as the two of you have discussed in the course of the work. In case there is an item in the invoice that does not seem clear to you, feel free to ask your plumber about it. He should only be happy to give you the clarifications that you need. |
